Theatre is perhaps the oldest form of performance: ancient Greek and Roman dramas and comedies are still staged today, and the ruins of Greek and Roman theatres are there to give evidence of how much this art was considered important more than two thousand years ago.
"Commedia dell'Arte" is a type of comedy developed in 16th and 17th Century Italy, characterized by improvised text based on plot outlines (scenarios): pretty much in the same way cabaret performers often act today.
Many excellent drama schools are located in Milan. One of this the famous Giorgio Strehler Piccolo Teatro, attracts students from many countries.
The Accademia di Italiano has developed Italian for Theatre courses designed for people who attend or have enrolled in Thatre courses or for those who have a personal or professional interest in Theatre. The aim of these courses is to help them gain the the necessary vocabulary and terminology used in the art, along with insight into the History of Theatre.
In addition to eventual topics of specific interest for each student, the course deals with the Hstory of Theatre, theatrical forms and famous playwrights, all with the aid of theatre visits and live performances.
The course concentrates on the study of the Italian language: the programme is the same as the Standard Italian Course of 20 lessons per week combined with 5 individual (5 every week) or 10 individual (10 every week) lessons. At the same time, it focuses on tailor-made lessons created to meet the language needs of students and professionals.
