In Florence
"Once upon a time..." Pinocchio at Palazzo Pitti. From it's earliest publisher Paggi to it's present day publishers Giunti. Drawings and books from it's publishers
"Once upon a time there was... - A king! - my young readers immediately cry out. No, children, you're wrong. Once upon a time there was a piece of wood".
It was 1880, when the "Children's Magazine (Giornale dei bambini)" published the first instalment of "A puppet's story (Storia di un burattino)", a novel that was to elevate the figure of Pinocchio to world fame and to become - with the title of "The adventures of Pinocchio (Le avventure di Pinocchio)" - the most translated book in the world after the Bible.
"Once upon a time a piece of wood". And out into the world bloomed the gentle strictness of the Turquoise Fairy, the bumbling anxiety of Geppetto, the boundless liveliness of Pinocchio and the profound meanings of a fairy tale that beneath it's educational optimism hides the exact opposite, a subtle and sarcastic critique of the very platitudes that imbued those pedagogical intentions.
