Getting about Milan

Getting about Milan is quite simple, especially if you take advantage of the three underground lines, the urban railway (called “Passante Ferroviario”) and a network of surface transport counting more than 100 different lines between trams, buses and trolley buses.

Most of Milan can be reached by public transportation, managed by ATM (Azienda Trasporti Milanese, Milanese Transport Company).
Public transport runs from early morning until late evening. It is reduced or wholly suspended only between 0.30 a.m. and 6.00 a.m.
It's easy to reach AI

Underground
An extensive underground network, including three lines, runs under Milan:

-
Line 1, or Red Line
-
Line 2, or Green Line
- Line 3, or Yellow Line

Most underground stations are accessible to disabled persons through elevators and escalators. Transport network includes both the underground and surface transport. This implies that the ATM ticket can be used on any mean of transport.

Tickets and travel cards
You can access all public transport with the same ticket, which is sold at authorised newspaper stands, bars, tobacconist shops, or machines. On trams, buses and trolleybuses tickets must be stamped as soon as you get on board and are valid 75 minutes. In the underground, tickets must be stamped at the entrance gates. The underground tickets allow you to change to another underground line or to a bus or tram, but they do not allow you to exit and access the underground again (even within the 75 minutes limit).

Prices quoted are as of January 2007 and might change:
- ordinary tickets allow you to travel for 75 minutes on the urban network and cost 1 Euro;
- one-day or two-day travel cards allow free circulation on all public urban transport lines for 24 or 48 hours from the moment they are first stamped and cost 3 and 5.50 Euros respectively;
- monthly season-tickets allow holders unlimited travel on the public urban network for a month and cost 30.00 Euros (17 Euros for students under 26 years of age) + 10 Euros for the first release only
- annual season-tickets allow holders unlimited travel on the public urban network for 1 year and cost 300 Euros + 10 Euros for the first release only .

Travel cards can be purchased in the ATM info points of the following underground stations: Cadorna (lines 1 and 2), Duomo (lines 1 and 3), Loreto (lines 1 and 2), Centrale FS (lines 2 and 3), Romolo (line 2).

To purchase a season-ticket you will need the following:
- a form available from the ATM info points mentioned above
- identity card
- 1 passport-size photo
